Obituary for Philip Leroy Groves

Philip Leroy Groves

Philip “Phil” LeRoy Groves, Sr., 81, of Boca Raton, Florida, passed away Tuesday June 20, 2017 at his home. His last days and hours on Earth were spent in the loving care of family.

Phil is survived by his children Philip Groves, Jr., Todd Groves, Gael Roney, and Steven Groves. He leaves his grandchildren Monica Rodriguez, Casey Groves, Christian Roney, and Cole Roney. He also leaves behind his brothers Richard and David Groves, and sisters Jeannine Johnson and Kathy Tuffs, and many nieces, nephews, and friends.

Phil was born on May 10, 1936, in Salt Lake City, Utah to his parents Mable and Willice Groves. He enjoyed a warm family life, spending many summers at a relative’s farm. He went to High School in Arlington, VA, and earned a degree at the University of Maryland. Beginning in 1956, he was married to Dorothy June Kreis for nearly 10 years, fathering Phil Jr and Todd. Starting in 1966, he was married to Elizabeth Ann Murchake for over 20 years, fathering Gael and Steven. Later, he had a loving relationship with Patsy Dalton for 20 years. As a young man, he served in the US Air Force, followed by a career at IBM, and later worked as a stock trader at Oppenheimer. His artistic sensibilities and a love for the written word drove him to author two books: “Hard Cash,” a primer on the world of stock investment, and “Jiro’s Dream,” a fictional account of a Japanese World War II pilot, torn between a conflicted love of country and a true love for the woman of his dreams.

As the son of a career Army officer, Phil moved often during his childhood. This compelled him to develop a quick and ready sense of humor, which proved useful for making new friends. His love of cracking wise stayed with him through his entire life, and served him and his family well. When he was diagnosed with Parkinson’s Disease, he took it in stride and indulged in playful joking when many might not. When he received the recent diagnosis of esophageal stage 4 cancer, he received the news with grace, and never let go of his sense of humor. With his earliest years influenced by the events of World War II, he would draw pictures of his favorite fighter planes, which included the P-51 Mustang and the Japanese Zero. He also nurtured a love of cars. He enjoyed designing his own engine modifications to a Plymouth Duster while a young father; and later in life, acquired the car of his dreams, a 2006 black Corvette. He entered this world with a dimpled smile on his face. He left it the same way.
